United Kingdom: Old Man Sailing
Old Man Sailing
Some dreams take a lifetime
By: John Passmore
A thoroughly enjoyable book by retired journalist John Passmore, who took off to sea at the start of the pandemic lockdown in the UK, chasing a dream that had eluded him for 60 years. For 3,629 miles, he disappeared into a world of perfect solitude as he sailed single-handed around the top of the British Isles and down to the Azores and back, arriving 42 days later as a celebrated lockdown hero on national radio not having touched land once.
While this might not sound like much material for a book, author and sailor John Passmore has a way of making even the most mundane tasks seem hilarious and noteworthy. From managing limited supplies to failing equipment and shredded sails, John is faced with daily adversity but manages to turn alarming situations into comedy and you will find yourself chuckling at every turn of the page.
If you want to know if solo-sailing is for you, or indeed just want to be reminded of how extended periods of time on a small boat at sea makes you feel, this is the book for you. Funny, fascinating, insightful and inspirational – take a copy on holiday this summer for an extremely enjoyable read.
