Warning for when Approaching Niue

For those approaching Niue from the northeast, be aware of a dangerous reef.

Over the past few days, as we headed west in the light air, we kept working our way slightly northward in anticipation of the forecast wind shift to the north. This has worked well and we now have a great sailing angle for our final approach.

This morning we noted that we came within 20 miles of Antelope Reef. This is a reef with rocks awash at 18 13.916 S, 168 19.567 W. For those using electronic charts it is not evident unless quite zoomed in. Then it is clearly shown on both our Navionic and Nobeltec systems. For those not using paper charts or those who fail to run a detailed, zoomed in advanced inspection of their electronic route, I think it this reef represents a significant hazard. It is not mentioned in any cruising guides.

Our observations might save someone serious grief someday.
