Boaters looking to visit Studland Bay but who are concerned about what effect they could be having on the seabed can now refer to a newly published ‘Anchoring with Care’ guide to help them.
The guide, produced by the RYA, the Boat Owners Response Group, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, Natural England and the Dorset Wildlife Trust, provides boaters with a map showing where the seagrass meadows are together with top tips on how to anchor effectively whilst minimising their impact on the seabed.
Studland Bay is home to seagrass meadows which protect the coast from erosion and provide a home for a diverse range of fish and marine animals.
“There has been much debate over the interactions between boaters and the ecology of Studland Bay and this has left some people unsure about how best to go about enjoying this wonderful destination whilst looking after the environment they love” comments Caroline Price RYA Planning and Environmental Manager”.
The Anchoring with Care guide is being distributed by Dorset Wildlife Trust Marine Rangers and the RYA.
You can download the Anchoring with Care Guide and read further information on anchoring and mooring.
