Below is a translation of an article from a Panama newspaper, where the Panama Maritime Authorities (PMA) are giving notification to all persons and companies that provide a service to ships and yachts, that they will require an operation license (used to be called an operation permit) from the PMA.

It is hoped this will prevent any future problems for yachts visiting Panama.

“Panama Maritime Authority request legalized maritime services.

The companies that offer services to the marine community have 30 days count as of December 16, 2009, to submit a request to the Panama Maritime Authority.

A circular signed by the Port Director of the PMA, Joaquin Carrasquedo, informing that all persons – natural or juridical – that provide a service to the marine community, must formalize their request to obtain an operating license.

The services considered for operation are launch services providing crew, employee, pilots, equipment, hardware, spares etc. repair services, maintenance, remodelling or infrastructures, ship supplies, garbage, and assistance to ships/yachts, fumigation, agencies.

Companies and individuals have until the 29th of January 2010 to request their Operational License. After that date, the PMA will suspend entry and mobilization, clearance request of any company providing the maritime services without their license.

A representative from the maritime community greeted this initiative by the PMA, and stated that there are many persons and companies providing a service without a legitimate license to do so”.
