NSW Whale Guidelines For Winter Migration
Published 20 years ago, updated 6 years ago
Whale migration along the New South Wales coast occurs in June/July and September/October. The winter months are a time for whales to migrate north and they return down the coast in a southerly direction in spring. Boat owners should observe some basic rules when near whales. These requirements are for the safety of both the whales and boaters.
All vessels (motor and sail) should slow their speed down when 300 metres from a whale. They should only approach whales from the side and never from behind or in front (in the direction of the whales’ travel). Vessels should not come closer than 100 metres for an adult whale, 200 metres if there is also a calf present.
