China as a cruising destination? – new marina announced

Sat, 29 May 2010

China is not known as a cruising destination, but that could all change in the near future as China becomes more and more interested in yachting. Camper and Nicholsons Marinas, one of the world’s most prestigious marina operators, has just been commissioned to design and operate a marina in Sanya, in Southern China.

Sanya is situated strategically – as far as sailing goes – between the Philippines, Hong Kong and Vietnam, and the Volvo Ocean Race to be held in 2011/12 has scheduled Sanya as a stopover. With the publicity that accompanies all aspects of the Volvo Race, this will be an opportunity for China to showcase the new marina.

The marina will incorporate 350 berths for all sizes of yacht including superyachts and will be the centrepiece of a resort.

Camper and Nicholsons Marinas told Synfo News that they saw the project as ‘a highly significant step in its participation in China’s rapid growth in the premium marina sector.’

To facilitate the project, a delegation of Chinese authorities concerned with the project undertook a three-day fact-finding visit to Malta, which is where Camper & Nicholson have one of their most prestigious marinas, the Grand Harbour Marina.

The Deputy Mayor of Sanya city, Li Baiqing, acknowledged that the success of a marina was not only dependent on its design and build, but also on the resources, training and knowledge of the people who manage it, and he was therefore confident that Camper & Nicholson’s marinas were the right partner to ensure that Sanya Serenity Marina, which it is to be named, sets the right standard for premium marinas in the region.
