update on 2004 report Approaches To Cartagena
Greetings once again from Cartagena. Nice to report that no serious incidents have occurred in the last 2 years. We are seeing a significant increase in arrivals and the facilities here are slowly expanding as a result.
My comments on cruisers stopping on along the coast from Aruba to Cartagena seems a little out of date. Many have done so without problems… the area North of Sta Marta (the 5 bays) sticks out as being an excellent place to enjoy. The Barranquilla (Rio Magdalena entrance) area should still be avoided. In general terms, the security situation in Colombia has improved in recent years… many areas of Colombia can be safely visited.
The entrance to Cartagena using the Bocagrande small ship channel is being used more and more by sailors. THere are no leading marks but 2 lit buoys are present (the entrance is 70 mts wide RRR). On arrival, you should call Port control on CH16 even if planning to enter through the small ship channel.
Remember at night backlighting can be a problem with the Bocagrande entrance. Min. depth 2.6 metres (8 feet).
