Izmir - Docking

There is a choice of several anchorages in Izmir Bay as well as two nice spots further west: Urla and Çesmealti. Both also have city walls where yachts could, in theory, tie up, but there is never any room.

Yachts can dock in the old harbor in Izmir town as well as at the Marina Levent to the SW of the city and at the new marina at Güzelbaçhe, on the southern shore on the approaches to Izmir. Recently the bay has been cleaned of some of the pollutions.

The commercial harbor is out of bounds to yachts. In the old harbor, berth stern-to in the NE corner. The holding is good in thick, black mud, but there is often an uncomfortable chop.

Levent Marina is a small independent concern to the SW of the city (38° 24’23.49N, 27° 04’07.66E) located next to the auto ferry stop on the south side of Izmir Bay in Uçkuyular. Staff are reported to be very friendly to visiting yachts. The ferry to Izmir is just outside the gate and there is a small town two kms (1.2 miles) away. Advance booking is worthwhile as space is very limited here.

Güzelbaçhe Marina is a municipal marina currently under construction some distance from Izmir city, but with good transport links (38° 22’40.15N, 26° 53’06.83E). The marina is – at the time of writing – still unfinished and there continues to be no charge for berthing here.

There is a new marina being constructed on the SE side of Izmir, ½ between Levent Marina and downtown. Putting in the quay as this is being written (2016-01-10). Might be YEARS before ready.

Levent Marina update. Staying here the winter for 2015. Great Staff. Showers unheated so be careful on cold days. WiFi has some problems also. Safe even in the 60+ knot winds recently experienced. There is a GREAT farmer’s market on Sundays near to the bus station some 15 minutes by foot from the marina. The subway downtown is a litter further and the subway allows you to take a bike on it. The ferry boats are quite close and can take you downtown with your bike. Buses are rampant but none allow a bike. Again, the marina staff are absolutely a delight to deal with! For the winter season in 2015, three boats with 5 people (and a cat) are here, the rest are locals.

For Guzelbache, please note that as of Oct 2015, it was free. There was a GRAND OPENING of sorts on 2 Jan 2016 but there still were no services available so mooring is still free. The officials there do intend to put in floating piers for small boats and “lazy lines” for larger ones, + shore power and water. When is the big unknown.

I spent some time in Levent Marine in Sep/Oct 2015 whilst awaiting my boat being shipped back to the UK. The staff were absolutely amazing. Nothing was too much trouble for them and they went out of their way to help me overcome the bureaucracy associated with customs and the port authority. They are genuinely friendly and obliging. I highly recommend Levent marina. I have never come across such a helpful and enthusiast marina team. Others would do well to emulate them.
