Taiwan - Immigration
The most updated information regarding Immigration matters in Taiwan can be found at the Bureau of Consular Affairs.
Passports must be valid for more than six months at the time of arrival.
Some nationalities must obtain a visa before arrival from a Republic of China embassy, consulate or trade mission abroad. The most convenient offices will probably be in Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore or Thailand. From these offices, one may obtain a visa or letter of recommendation exchangeable for a visa. The letters may be exchanged at a Republic of China diplomatic or consular office en route, or on arrival at Keelung or Kaohsuing ports, these two being the only ports where these letters may be exchanged.
Many nationalities are exempt from visa requirements if arriving at the following harbors:
- Keelung Harbor
- Taipei Harbor
- Taichung Harbor
- Kaohsiung Harbor
- Hualien Harbor
- Shuitou Harbor
- Fu’ao Harbor
Exemption periods vary, so check the Bureau of Consular Affairs website for specific time periods. These visa-exempt nationalities include:-
All EU nations, Andorra, Australia, Belize, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Dominican, Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Holy See (Vatican), Honduras, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Liechtenstein, Malaysia, Monaco, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Paraguay, Philippines, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, San Marino, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Switzerland, and United States of America.
A visitors’ visa is valid for three months from the date of issue and is good for a single visit for a 60-day period. An additional 60-day extension is possible for citizens of Canada, the UK, and the USA.
On August 1, 2021, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced a one-year extension of the trial visa-free entry for nationals of Thailand, Brunei, the Philippines, and Russia through July 31, 2022, and to continue the Project for Simplifying Visa Regulations for Tourists from Southeast Asian countries for a further year through December 31, 2022.
The Foreign Affairs Police speak English. Application should be made to them for visa extensions.
Citizens of the People’s Republic of China are refused entry.
See the website of the Bureau of Consular Affairs for more details.
