Yacht Legend called into Port Sudan on 9 January 2022 during a passage from Salalah in Oman to Hurghada in Egypt for refueling and water. Having contacted an agent in advice with approx. ETA we arrived at 2am ahead of schedule, but the officials and the agent responded immediately and came to assist. We were shown were to anchor inside the port at the small yacht anchorage, and assisted to put a line to shore. By 3pm same day our documents had been processed and the yacht refueled. We were cleared in and out in same day and issued exit clearance. We could have left immediately but took the opportunity to have a nice dinner in the flat calm of the harbour a good night of sleep and left early the following morning.
The fuel was $1.3 per liter from a fuel truck with a long hose. The water was $50 to fill up all tanks. The quality of the potable water from a water truck was excellent,156ppm on our measuring gizmo. The local people were very friendly and helpful. We were gifted some huge water melons and other fruits. They don’t get many foreign visitors and all wanted to chat. Many spoke excellent English. Apart from having to ‘gift’ quite a few packs of cigarettes’ to the customs officials, it was all really simple. Our agent ‘Yahia’ at Al Watania Shipping was very good, and came out at 2am to meet us ! If you make a stop in Port Sudan it is ESSENTIAL to have US DOLLARS before you arrive. It is not possible to pay by debit card, credit card, make a bank transfer, or to get money out of an ATM or bank. US$ cash is king. in our case, our Agent fees were US$ 400, fuel costs US$ 1,000, water US$50, and port clearances around US$ 300.
My 26 year old son and girlfriend are heading to Sudan en route to find an airport from which they can fly home to the UK. They have been at sea for 21 days and badly want to get home to family. We have heard that Khartoum airport is only open till 18.00 GMT on 21st. Any advice on how long they can stay in Port Sudan or where they may be able to fly from ? Sally
