Statia - Health
The St. Eustatius Health Care Foundation manages the local hospital on St. Eustatius and emergency medical care. There are two decompression chambers on the Island.
All travelers should ensure they have adequate travel health insurance including evacuation.
Vaccine-Preventable Diseases:
Make sure you are up to date on all routine vaccines prior to your trip.
Vaccinations for Hepatitis A and B as well as Typhoid are recommended.
A certificate of yellow fever vaccination is required from travelers aged 6 months or over arriving from countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission.
Food and Water Concerns:
Hepatitis A and Typhoid are present in Statia and can be carried through contaminated food or water.
Tap water on the island is considered safe to drink. The water provided by the local water company is processed through reverse Osmosis. Bottled water is widely available.
Mosquito-Born Diseases:
There is a risk of dengue and zika in Statia.
Because of the risks to pregnancy, travelers should consult the CDC Travelers’ Health website for the most current recommendations for Zika and avoid getting bitten wherever possible.
Prevention:
- Use a repellent containing 20%-30% DEET or 20% Picaridin on exposed skin. Re-apply according to the manufacturer’s directions.
- Wear neutral-colored (beige, light grey) long-sleeved clothing.
- Pre-soak or spray the outer layer of clothing and gear with permethrin.
- Ensure that the hatch and window screens work properly.
Other Diseases:
Animals:
Sint Eustatius is free of dog rabies. However, rabies can still occur in wild animals, including bats.
Prescription Drugs:
Always keep your prescription medication in its original container and carry a copy of your doctor’s prescription with you. If you are bringing prescription medication, check with the Dutch government to make sure it is permitted on the island.
St. Eustatius is served by Golden Rock Pharmacy. It is a full-service pharmacy that offers both prescription and over-the-counter drugs as well as other products.
Refer to their contact details on the Statia Government webpage.

Arrived April 23, 2022.. followed pre arrival procedures on Noonsite.. after anchoring we proceeded to the commercial dock just inside the jetty at the far south of the Harbor.. There is a dingy section on NE side of the dock. Visit the guard house. You will then be sent to Customs and Immigration just opposite the guard house. Told we can check out 24 hrs in advance. Everyone was super nice and inviting. Cheers!
Fogot to add.. while waiting on Customs paperwork, the Health Dept stopped to see our vaccination cards which had been previously submitted online.. Simple and easy. 🙂

No National Park Moorings to be seen now though the holding seems good and the Harbour Authority’s check-in/out fees are now at $35 (for two people on a 35′ yacht). Contrary to the Doyle Pilot Guide you can now clear out up to 24-hours before departure and you’d be well advised to do so; whilst posted Office hours are 08:00-17:00, we found that 09:30 to 15:30 were nearer to the actual hours.
