Entrance

The harbor master should be contacted 72 hours before arrival for permission to enter.

The harbor entrance is somewhat difficult to see when viewed from the sea. The position is approximately 1 mile NW of Cape St. Francis point.

The entrance of the harbor is 45 meters wide and 3 – 5 meters deep and is north facing with green and red flashing navigation lights on starboard and port sides of the entrance. G.P.S co-ordinates are 34° 10’851” S and 24° 51’219” E.

The harbor entrance is prone to silting up and after strong weather, the port could be closed until the entrance has been dredged again (hours or days). This is why it is important to make advance contact with the Harbour Master.

All craft are warned that abnormally steep and dangerous waves can occur across the harbor entrance under easterly and south-easterly conditions.

Moorings

This harbor is enclosed on the SE and eastern side by a breakwater of 230 meters with a concrete jetty and floating jetty solely for the use of commercial vessels.

On the western side of the entrance is the outer wall of the recreational harbor consisting of a man-made island on which the Port Island housing has been built. The inner recreational harbor is made up of walk-on floating jetties (B, C, D, E, F and G), all privately owned. Arrangements can be made for visiting yachts and small vessels for short term mooring facilities.

N.S.R.I. (Sea Rescue) is situated in the harbor.

Town

The harbor offices, shops restaurants and hotel are located behind the fish landing and off-loading quay, extending out from the base of the breakwater. St. Francis town is approx. 4km away from the harbor.

Update Nov 2018 – The harbormaster recommends and would prefer is contacted at least 72 hours prior to arrival to make arrangements. Johan – 082 657 0855

The entrance is dredged to 2.8m, but after strong weather, the port could be closed until dredged again(hours or days, they have a dredging barge ). Hence why it’s recommended to contact them before. There is also limited space available on usually private moorings and the owner of the mooring must be contacted. They can also tell you the possible options for moorings for prices etc…

The place is beautiful, nice secluded and very safe harbour with a small shop and restaurants, walking paths and a large grocery store a few kilometres away. There are surf spots at walking distance.

    Beautiful stop on the coast!
