Arriving in Slovenia with a Pet Onboard

Two useful European Commission links for traveling with pets in the EU:

1. Travelers’ Points of Entry if coming from a third country with a dog, cat or ferret – country specific information

2. Animal health requirements applicable to dogs, cats and ferrets moved into EU countries – country specific information

Slovenia’s Rules if coming from an EU country

Dogs and cats must:

  • have a European pet passport
  • be identified with a microchip, or tattoo
  • be vaccinated against rabies with a valid vaccine at the time of travel and included in the passport.

A non-commercial movement is permitted for an animal that:

  • is less than 12 weeks old and has not yet been vaccinated against rabies, or
  • 12 to 16 weeks old and has been vaccinated against rabies, but the vaccination is not yet valid

The animal must be accompanied by either:

  • a signed declaration, or
  • are accompanied by their mother. Their mother’s EU passport clearly shows that the mother has valid vaccination against rabies prior to their birth.

Slovenia’s Rules if coming from outside the EU

To introduce a pet from a third country, you must enter with your pet through one of the designated Travelers’ Points of Entry.

Dogs and Cats must:

  • have an identification document (EU passport or a veterinary certificate, certified by an official veterinarian in a third country.
  • be identified with a microchip, or tattoo
  • be vaccinated against rabies with a valid vaccine
  • undergo a pre-entry rabies antibody titration test in an approved laboratory if you come from a country not listed in Annex II of Regulation (EU) 577/2013

Slovenia does not allow animals that are:

  • less than 12 weeks old and has not yet been vaccinated against rabies, or
  • 12 to 16 weeks old and has been vaccinated against rabies, but the vaccination is not yet valid

Some breeds are subject to strict control and regulations so you need to check your dog is not in that category.
