Romania Health for Visitors

Romania’s medical facilities are generally regarded as good, but there are some limitations in the availability of medical supplies, especially outside major cities.

European travelers carrying the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) are entitled to free or reduced cost of medical care.

Nationals of countries who do not have a reciprocal health agreement with Romania are expected to pay cash upfront to access health services.

Ambulance services are unreliable in some areas outside larger cities.

Decompression chambers are available in Romania.

If you become seriously ill or injured, you’ll need to be evacuated to a better facility, but medical evacuation can be costly.

Health insurance is highly advised.

Vaccine-Preventable Diseases:

Be sure you are up to date on routine vaccines.

Hepatitis A and B are recommended for unvaccinated travelers.

The global increase in measles cases necessitates the complete vaccination of individuals before traveling.

Mosquito-borne Diseases:

Mosquitoes are present in the Danube Delta and some low-lying regions.

Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by sand flies’ bite.

Other Diseases:

Tick-borne encephalitis poses a risk in Romania, with ticks being most active from early spring to late autumn. Bihor, Bistrita-Nasaud, Cluj, Mures, and Salaj are among the northwestern counties where cases have been reported.

There are currently no available vaccinations or medications to prevent the infection. Avoid bug bites.

Food and Water Concerns:

It is safe to consume tap water in any city, town, or village in Romania.

Tap water in Bucharest is constantly tested, and the local water company releases the results on a regular basis.

Prescription Drugs:

In order to have your medication from a pharmacy in Romania, you must present a prescription.

The majority of prescription and over-the-counter medications are available in Romania, though they are frequently sold under different names.

The Romanian National Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices provides a comprehensive list of approved medicines available in Romania.
