As we were arriving at the end of a long day and didn’t like the possibility of being moved along from an anchorage off the beach, so we went the extra 5nm to the bay of Sao Martinho.
There is room for a few boats to anchor around the moored fishing boats, but we don’t recommend coming in with a big swell at low tide as some of the rollers can break at the entrance.
Not something I’d want to experience! Otherwise, it was a great spot, with only a little rolling from the residual swell entering.
We arrived at Nazaré in early September 2018. Unfortunately, Nazaré Marina has very few berths at the moment as one part of the marina is closed and vessels will have to moor alongside each other.
Overall the marine gave the impression to be run down. Cost for a vessel between the 12 & 15 m is 32.85 Euro/night.
David Whirled, called Alec, has been repairing everything around the boat in Nazare for more than 10 years (skilled boat builder, mechanic). For the rare problems, he can not solve himself, he knows the right people around Nazare.
Alec can be found in the SW corner of the pitches in the fishing port opposite the Yacht Club. (+351 914 096 959)
We visited Nazare end of June 2018 and stayed in the Cluba Naval da Nazare, charges for 14-meter boat 33.00 euro a night including VAT, wifi, water and power. There are only a few visitors spots available.
In hi-season call or email ahead for a spot (emails were promptly answered), we saw one boat turned away for lack of space. Very professional and helpful with docking, very weak wifi.
We checked out Nazare Marina where we had stayed 10 years prior, Captain Mike is gone, facilities looked run down, no one in the office spoke English if Yacht Cub is full still a good alternative. Only concern; in big NW swells, the visitors pontoons appeared very exposed.
Just spent 2 nights in the marina of the Clube Naval (NE corner of the harbour). Very friendly and helpful. Price for a boat under 12 m € 17,30 per night in low season, € 27,70 in high season. 25% extra for a multi-hull.
Some Extra Information:
There is a bus from the Harbour to the Market (Mercado) and also to big supermarkets LIDL and Continente (Av. Badajoz). Timetable here: http://www.cm-nazare.pt/pt/servicos/transportes
Taxi Stand Number: +351262551363 (There is a normal legal charge when calling a taxi (+3€) and another surcharge when using the boot (+3€)), So it should be around 15€/20€ to go and get supplies at the supermarket. Most drivers will speak English.
Nazare is a great gateway to discover the nearby quiet town of Alcobaca (famous for the monastery and conventual cakes) and even Batalha, Fatima. It’s well served by fast and quite often buses.
