Auckland - Docking
Auckland’s facilities are of the highest standard, with eight major marinas, including those in the Westhaven-Viaduct area, which have previously hosted the Volvo Ocean Race and America’s Cup (twice).
Anchorages:
Anyone visiting Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour and the surrounding islands of the Hauraki Gulf by yacht or super yacht should make themselves aware of the Harbour Rules and Regulations on the Auckland Harbour Master’s website.
Great Barrier Island – no anchoring areas
There are three no anchoring/closed areas on Great Barrier Island. The no anchoring areas are: Blind Bay, Whangaparapara and Tryphena Harbours. You can anchor with a permit from MPI, but not for any other reason.
Contact the Ministry of Primary Industries for further details.
Superyachts
There are specific requirements for super yachts.
- Superyachts over 40m in length anchoring in the Auckland region will be assisted by the Harbour Master in regards to daily voyage plans and suitable anchoring locations and will be required to pay a one-off 12 month Navigation and Safety fee based on NZ$20 per metre of length plus GST.
- The annual fee will not apply to superyachts proceeding directly to a marina berth in Auckland City or anchored for less than 24 hours while awaiting a berth.
Moorings:
Mooring sites are located within mooring zones throughout the Auckland region. Auckland Transport (AT) grants an annual mooring licence to boat owners, allowing occupancy of a mooring (annual fees apply). Swing moorings are privately owned but the Harbour Master’s Office manages their placement and safety.
There are 70 Mooring Management Areas (MMA) where mooring is permitted in the Auckland region.
See the Auckland Transport/Moorings page for more information.

I’d like to add a business that gave us a great price and especially good service.
I needed a new house battery bank and purchased 8x205Ah golf cart type batteries from Battery Life, Brian Hewitt is the owner and can be contacted on mobile +64 274 836 020 and email brian@batterylife.co.nz.
Brian not only delivered the new batteries, but he spent a whole afternoon helping me shift the old batteries and install the new ones, even drove me to get some spare cables, all free of charge and with a smile.

Cat NOVAE
Viaduct marina is very noisy at night; impossible to have a good night sleep. The staff are nice but have little consideration for the yacht in transit. For example, the trash cans are moved by the security guard at 3:00 AM after the garbage truck empties them at around 2:00 AM. When I highlighted the issue, the answer was “This is how we have been doing it for the last 8 years”. Also, the marina is occupied by “charter” motor yachts that become a real night club when at berth.
So in summary, this is not a real place for yachties, more a party place where Kiwis are going out at night.
Price range is between NZD 45 and NZD 80
