Following violent protests in May 2024 the situation is now stable and Noumea can once again be used as a stopover. See Security for more info.

Where is Lifou?

Lifou is the principal island of the Loyalty Group, and is a nice stopover on the route from Port Vila to Noumea.

Cruiser Highlights for Lifou:

We, the island’s capital is on the east coast, and is most convenient for boats coming from that direction and those on course from Vanuatu to New Caledonia. There is a new marina here.

The north and west sides offer beautiful sandy beaches and good snorkeling. The local people are friendly and make you feel welcome.

Entrance Notes and Cautions for Lifou:

The We Marina is on the east side of the island and the harbour is a man made breakwater with a large pier for the inter-island ferry.  The turn into the marina is sharp – stay to the north side of the channel.  The marina is very small and the lowest draft in the entrance and in the marina slip is 2.5m at low tide.

Position:

20° 54.93’S, 167° 16.65’E (harbour entrance)

We (pronounced Way) is not a port of entry or clearance and yachts may not stop there or anchor anywhere until after clearance in Noumea. Special exceptions can be made for rallies – like the Australian https://www.downunderrally.com/ and the http://www.islandcruising.nz Rally.

Full details on the ports and anchorages in the Loyalty Islands are on the Rocket Cruising Guide to New Caledonia https://cruising-newcaledonia.com
