Marina Smir - Docking

Docking:

The harbour entrance is very narrow due to silting, but is buoyed. Keep hard to the starboard side of the channel – there are small port-hand buoys in the channel – as the port side of the entry is silted.

The reception dock is immediately to port as you enter, right in front of the conspicuous Marina-Office Tower and “around the corner” from the fuel station.

It is well protected from all weathers and with a good depth. Some berths have lazy lines, others you will have to use your own anchor. Both alongside berthing and Med mooring are possible. If you come here in the “off” season it is more likely you will be permitted to go alongside when more space is available. There is metered water and electricity on the dock and good security.

The Port Captain is said to be very helpful.

Ashore:

The marina is surrounded by restaurants, much more pricey than those in town. There are nice beaches close by.

There are no shops in the marina or nearby, so you will need to take a taxi into Tetouan, where there is a Carrefour and other shops.

Buses run from the marina into town.

Arrived in the evening and were able to check in right away. Had to do a bit more papewrwork in the morning but process was pretty smooth. They let us stay on the reception dock the whole time which was convenient. Had access to electricity and water plus the marina office was right next door with a big mostly empty building and terrace nice for sitting and doing computer work. Huge marina and mostly empty by the way, narrow buoyed entrance as mentioned. Keep to starboard against seawall when entering. Great place to leave boat and venture inland.

Sitting in Smir on the fuel dock waiting for the customs who won’t clear you until 10.00 local time. So much for an early start. Smir is expensive to moor. They have put up their prices for 2017. The alongside mooring was very noisy with loud music at night. The café’s are three times more expensive than in the city. Wifi is only available in the office, unless you have an expensive cup of coffee in a café and get a code for their wifi. Marina staff are friendly and helpful. The complex and surroundings are ultra tat. It is after all a holiday complex. I certainly wouldn’t go again. M’diq looked more interesting.
Oh, and they had no diesel. If you do decide to go, Tetouan is worth a visit. We flagged down a blue and white car which is a public taxi. You cram in with the locals and pay 10 dirham to the city. At 12.5 to the pound thats cheap travel.
The entry to the port has plenty of water if you keep the red buoys to port as per norm

Calling the marina for renewing the 18-months VAT count soon.
Does one need a local agent for above plus fuel top-up or it is straightforward procedure and safe to do by myself?
