Mazatlan - Docking

There are two marinas located 10 kms (6.2 miles) up the coast from Mazatlan. They are both in the channel leading to Laguna Sabalo. From here it’s a 5-minute ride by local open-air taxi (called a Pulmonia) into the old harbour at Mazatlan.

The entrance is reported to be shallow – depths have been measured at 8ft at zero tide. When entering stay close to the wall. There will possibly be a dredge on the wall inside so stay very close. Once beyond the dredge, depths open up a little. Visiting cruisers suggest checking your slip depth at the marinas.

Marina El Cid is a popular location for sports fishermen as the local hotel and the marina both sponsor tournaments. It is too exposed to provide a hurricane hole.

Marina Mazatlan is home to many long-term sailboats. It provides a much greater degree of protection as does the Isla Mazatlan Golden resort.

Club Nautico is small, with few berths and offers no protection in a hurricane.

Fonatur is the newest marina/boatyard and has a few slips, travelift and dry storage facilities.

    Data Entry1 says:

It is best to enter the channel leading to the marinas at high tide, and slack tide as currents can be very strong- up to 4 kts. Even at high tide we saw down to 13′ over the bar. Easiest fuel dock to access is El Cid, but beware of currents. Marina Mazatlan is in good condition, though some security gates don’t work. Showers are good and there are plenty of restaurants in the area. Air-conditioned buses are 10 pesos into the city- look for “Sabalo Centro”
