Called Marina Chahue to see if they are open. Izequiel from the office said that due to a major 7.4 earthquake in June 2020 the seabed of the marina has risen in places to a maximum depth of 6 feet. He said flat bottom boats can come in, but keel boats might have a problem. They hope to have money in the 2021 budget to dredge. Also, importantly, he said that the charts of the Huatulco area cannot be trusted as other seabed areas have risen half a meter. “Rocks that used to be under water are now above water”.
He recommended calling to check status well in advance. The telephone number is Shawn Breeding and Heather Bansmer’s cruising book, Pacific Mexico, still works as of this date. It is (958) 587-2652.
FYI if wanting to clear in at Huatulco:
You will first have to drive 2.5 hours to the Banjercito in Salina Cruz for the TIP. Complete the paperwork and then return the next day for the TIP.
Then bring that to the Port Captain to complete the check in process. Customs and immigration will meet you there.
I spoke to the harbormaster who confirmed marina is closed and that they are waiting for dredging equipment to arrive. No estimate on when it will re-open. I will be checking again in mid-December and will report back. Meanwhile, sailors heading south and crossing the Golfo de Tehauntepec should plan another location to wait for a weather window.
November 2018 – marina is closed until further notice due to extreme silting. Rob on Avant.
