Mauritius - Customs
Mauritius Customs Rules for Yachts
Arriving by Yacht
Any foreign yacht is allowed to stay in Mauritius/Rodrigues waters for a maximum of 3 months from the date of arrival. If a yacht wishes to stay beyond 3 months, security in the form of a cheque or bank guarantee to cover duties and taxes for the boat, will have to be submitted. These should be presented at New Customs House in the Free Port area.
Customs must be notified of any change in the duration of stay and a mail must be sent to the following e-mail addresses: btu.customs@mra.mu and boarding.customs@mra.mu.
The Customs Anti-Narcotics Section (CANS) of the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) will search the boat before issuing the arrival clearance.
See the Clearance section for full details of Customs procedure on arrival.
Importing Spares/Parts
Unless a purchase is made at a pre-approved “Tax Return” or duty-free shop, VAT taxes for parts going aboard yachts-in-transit cannot be refunded.
Other Items
- It is prohibited to import fresh fruits from Asia east of 60°E (including India and Pakistan), plants, fresh vegetables, and sugar cane.
- No firearms are allowed, and this includes spear guns. Declare your firearms and spear guns and the Mauritius Customs will hold them for the duration of your stay in Mauritius. You will be given a receipt and told to call for them 24 hours prior to departure so that the weapons can be delivered to the waterfront office for you to collect when you check out.
- Any personal medicinal drugs should be covered by a prescription. Scheduled drugs, such as tranquilizers, morphine, and other strong painkillers require by law, authorization before import.
- There have been instances of Foot & Mouth disease on some of the Mascarene Islands and the health officials are very aware of and concerned about limiting the extent of this. They do not want fresh produce or dairy moved between the islands and will possibly confiscate such items on arrival.
- A drone permit is not required for private recreational drone use.
On Departure
Items detained by Customs at time of boarding, pending reshipment, will be returned on board by Customs prior to the departure of yacht. For this purpose, necessary arrangements have to be made by contacting Customs on the following phone numbers 59421449 or 52519296 in order to avoid any delay in the time of departure.

We found most of the information here inaccurate as of Sep 2024. Forms, Emails, Whatsapp numbers etc.
Thanks for advising us of out of date information. We have been in touch with the Mauritius authorities and updated our formalities information as of today.
I would like to add my own comments re Yoann and Patrick – see below. Over the past year I have been seriously looking at purchasing an offshore vessel ex Reunion and after seeing their recommendations on Noonsite, I made contact with them both. I am based in NZ so it was all long distance, email and WhatsAp.
Both these guys ( and they do now know each other ) not only traveled across to Reunion to carry out a full and comprehensive inspection of the vessel but whilst they were there they carried out an amazing amount of repairs and maintenance, getting things going that quite frankly the owner had given up on.
These two, if you need electronics or mechanical assistance are honest, reliable, experts in their fields and their costs or rather lack of…is amazing. Simply I cannot recommend them enough. Dave Blackley. Kiwifarmer.

Yoann is indeed a reliable electronics fellow who is very friendly and capable. He would like you to also have his email address for all your electronic repairs. He’s fixing Prince Diamond’s Raymarine chart plotter. He can be reached at the phone number Tel: 572 34 80 6 or at yoann.ddm@live.com
Yes, Patrick is a good mechanical worker. Good rapid work and a specialist on Marine Diesel Engines. You can call him on +23059429989, WhatsApp +23058543216 or Email: angel111277@hotmail.com. Good man & great job – keep it up, Pat!
For all your electronics, Yoann is a great guy. He operates all over the island and came to us in Port Louis. He was working on another boat at La Balise and offered to come to us at Grand Baie.
He installed a new Raymarine part for our chart plotter. He also gave us advice on our new VHF wire. Speaks perfect English and French. Call him on 572 34 80 6.
Hi everyone, my name is Alex, I was a cruiser for several years and I now live in Mauritius, and it might well be my turn to help other sailors. Let me know if I can assist with anything, contacts or directions, as facilities, equipment, and expertise are a bit scarce around here.
I work very close to the Caudan harbour. Drop me an email at alexsnow1184 at gmail.com (remove spaces) or text or call on 5257 3764 and leave a message. Hope you are enjoying your stay!
A new marina has opened 15 miles south of Port Louis, La Balise Marina. A safe and convenient place to leave your boat, especially if you wish to fly out of the country for a while. Entry channel depth does not exceed 1.5 m, so access is restricted to catamarans and centerboard. Contact : https://www.yachtmauritius.com/boat-management/. S/Y Dreamweaver
