Feedback from a cruising boat that visited Kudat recently en-route from the Philippines to Bitung:
Kudat inward and outward clearance
We just stopped in Kudat for refueling, so we took the boat into the Kudat Marina area and laid up by the pier of the slipway where we bought fuel and got water.
Drove from there into town and first stop is Quarantine which is in the same building as the Immigration (this immigration office is at the pier, few meters from the main immigration office, blue gates).
After quarantine, it was immigration, then customs next door and port clearance which is 5 min walk away. All smooth, brilliant people, no cost and no hassle.
No need to use agent as many people are suggesting (the boat we were traveling on is 80 feet). As we were leaving the next morning, the port authority issued inward and outward clearance all in one go. So next day we simply walked into customs and then to Immigration to clear out. NOTE that all crew have to attend to Immigration as they take fingerprints of all.
Posted on behalf of Joe Bayne re. Penewasa Shipyard, Kudat
Recently completed a haulout in Kudat Borneo and was very satisfied. The yard is commercial, catering to fishing boats which are on a dirt hard stand. Yachts can also use this at a slightly cheaper rate, but we chose to use the concrete apron by the office and travel lift. Each vessel on this apron got its own shower and toilet which also gave a small amount of storage – but not for paint and the like.
The staff was friendly and accommodating.
We did this as mostly DIY but contracted with Tommy to assist in hull painting. He normally gives a contract price, but after our disaster with Zeke in Carmen Philippines I oversaw the work and we agreed on a price for him to spray and the labour for sanding and priming would be separate. This worked well and the Imron paint from Dayspring in Kota Kinabalu gave a nice gloss.
I had some stainless work done by the yard and was very pleased with it also.
The yard can organize galvanising and some supplies from KK.
I would use this yard again.
WOULD LIKE TO ADVISE PEOPLE THAT BOX JELLYFISH ARE VERY COMMON IN THE POND AND (2 ) 1.5-metre CROCS HAVE BEEN SEEN RECENTLY, STILL SMALL BUT STILL AROUND SO WHO KNOWS ?? A LOT OF PEOPLE JUMP IN UNAWARE OF ANY DANGERS AT ALL, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !!!!!!!!!!!!
Marina Jetty is open, however, it is really only suitable for boats up to 40ft and I would not leave the boat for any length of time, the marina was never built correctly from the start, the pylons were never rammed in, and are still moveable, the pontoons are small and are unstable the cleats were also never securely bolted in,there are lights now but no power for the boats unless you have a very long extension lead, this is an ok spot for a few days ? if it blows up I think they will have a problem, and the staff have no idea of boats including Adam Wong, so if there is a problem make sure your there !! also they have no insurance, boats on anchor should not pay until moorings are in place ? and the marina buys a boat to assist to back tie, there are many local boats also an anchor that is not paying!! most are not secured very well and often break loose, so be aware !!!!
Marina Jetty Kudat next to the Kudat Golf Club Marina Resort is now fully operational. It is a well-run facility and the office staff are very helpful. The office is open M-Sa 8:30-5:30. The facility includes water on the dock, restrooms with showers, a large upstairs outdoor covered deck with tables for gatherings, a large a/c room with tables and book exchange, and wi-fi in all public areas.
Currently, a caretaker lives in a room by the entrance who closes the front gates at night to vehicles. The rates are 800RM per month per boat in the marina. Weekly and daily rates are available. Boats tied to the wall pay 400RM for use of the facilities and dingy tie-up. The marina is clean and safe. The owners are very accommodating to cruisers and even hosted a grand Chinese New Year party on Feb 2 complete with lunch and a lion dance. Email: J-D_marinakudat@outlook.com and phone: 088-616298. The manager is Adam Wong
