I stay in Quinta do Lorde since last week (April 2017): all pontoons seem to be in order, there is space enough right now. Staff is very friendly and helpful. I took a car to check out the island: Marina Calheta is an alternative in the west, Funchal is loud and packed, Lugar do Baixo still a ruin.
I Agree with the below comment written by MoBoe. The Marina is very safe. The staff – two young ladies – are very helpful and make your stay easy. Connection with Funchal or the airport is easy by bus or taxi. There is also a laundry. The crystal clear water here means you can snorkel or swim in the surrounding area.
Madeira is a lovely destination; ensure you visit the western part of the island which is lush and green. We arrived at Marina Quinta do Lorde expecting to berth on the southerly guest berth, but it was gone (reported before but we had not read “noonsite” comments).
The wind was from the north. We caught a line in our prop and reverse was not available. The marina had been advised by email. No one was there, though we arrived at 1900LT. However, the staff is very friendly as reported and will go out of their way to assist.
There is a fly in the ointment though: the floating pontoons are in serious disrepair and after the marina replaced one, the removed unit showed rusted out beams and no piling sacrificial pads. This causes a problem with surge. For instance, we were moored at the far end of a finger and were subjected to a whip lash effect because none of the pontoons are stabilised by the absence of sacrificial pads/rollers. Additionally, the pilings themselves are being damaged because the contact is steel on steel… add quite some screeching! Not pleasant at all.
The marina should address this problem urgently if they wish to keep their otherwise excellent reputation.
Following on our earlier report, the staff at Marina Quinta do Lorde advised us the email had gone directly into their “spam” box.
Dear Sailor,
Concerning your comment, like we explained to you, your e-mail went to our spam box. Once more, we apologise for any inconvenience that this may have caused.
Concerning the state of the marina, as known, since the damage caused by the bad weather in 2013, many poontons got into bad condition. However, we are now repairing them section by section and work is progessing, like you could see during your stay in the marina.
We expect to have the marina completed by the middle of next year (2017).
Take care, and we hope to see you back at the marina in the near future.
Fair Winds and gentle seas!
Marina Quinta do Lorde TEAM
We moored in Quinta do Lorde Marina in March/2016. There was no lack of space. The destroyed visitor pontoon parallel to the breakwater was still not replaced and no sign of work ongoing.
But even arriving at night woulndt have been a problem for us, because the hammerheads were very long. And also for mooring at the normal pontoons would have been an option, because the spacing between the pontoons is big enough to turn a 15m boat comfotable.
The Hotel is now open at Quinta do Lorde. Currently boats visiting the marina can enjoy a 15% discount on food and drink in the all the bars and restaurants (there are 6 places in total), although the prices in most places are quite high (two gins and tonics in the cocktail bar would be 15€, but it is half price for happy hour between 5.30 and 6.30).
You can also use the gym for 5€ per day, and you can get 50% off the daily cost of using all of the pools (we think the discounted price is around 10€). There is still a shuttle service from the marina to the nearest supermarket in Machico, but it is now a small car (previously it was a large minibus).
We moored at Quinta do Lorde last week (Oct 8th to 15th, 2013). The marina and hotel were fully functioning minus a few of the typical marina shops. Fresh bread was available every morning.
The marina was full during our stay with several boats at anchor awaiting a time for entry. Whilst a little isolated the marina staff do a super job of helping connect vistors to essential services as listed above.
I cannot emphasize enough how helpful and pleasant all the staff were that we spoke to. This marina deserves to do well!
a 20% discount was offered (without us having to ask first)on production of a valid Seven Seas Assoc membership number.
