Latvia - Health
Latvia has a universal healthcare system funded by the government. Though underfunded, healthcare is satisfactory in the major cities such as Riga. However, if you are struck down by a major illness while in Latvia, it is
probably best to fly to Western Europe if you can. Many doctors are
undertrained and most lack up-to-date equipment, although there is an increasing number of private facilities with Western-trained doctors. Diagnostics is
especially uncertain. Emergency services can sometimes be slow.
The Latvian laws state that visitors may arrive and stay in Latvia if they have a valid health insurance policy that guarantees coverage of costs related to health care in Latvia.
Vaccine-Preventable Disease:
Aside from routine vaccines, make sure you are vaccinated for COVID-19 before travel.
Other vaccinations recommended by the CDC are Hepatitis A & B, Measles and Rabies.
Other disease concerns:
Tick-borne diseases (Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme Borreliosis): Thirty percent of the ticks in Latvia are infected. A vaccination against TBE is advisable. There is no vaccine against the Lyme disease. Always check for ticks.
