Cochin (Kochi) - Fuel & LPG

Fuel:

There are no diesel or gasoline/petrol pumps at the marina, or anywhere else that is close to the water – and all fuel is handled in jerry cans.

Fuel in Cochin is available through the services of an agent who will bring the fuel in 240 gallons (1000 liters) drums alongside the yacht. The agent mark up is about 20 percent. Be aware that some agents will try and sell cheaper diesel but this is the local fishermen’s diesel supply, which is mixed with kerosene.

For smaller quantities, getting the ferry across to the filling station (10 Rupee fare and a tuk tuk back 60 rupee fare) and filling jerry cans is the cheapest option. Note however that many Uber drivers now refuse to carry fuel. In fact, there are more and more taxis and Tuk-Tuks that simply don’t have the space to load jerry cans because that area in the trunk or boot is taken up with an LPG or CNG tank.

Alternatively, Nazar offers a fuel service and for a modest fee will drive you to the service station (to buy very clean diesel or petrol, and you can pay by credit card or cash) to fill up using your jerry cans or his jerry cans. For a flat commission of 12 rupees per liter, he will completely man-handle the cans and transfer the diesel into your tanks.

LPG / Gas:

Nazar can help with gas refills.

Although it is only June 2018, I have a very good idea of which boats have already passed through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea. There have been 31 private yachts that made the passage, of which 5 have made a North to South Passage. The boat names are:

ANNA SAARA, AURA, BENYLEO 2, BONAVENTURE (North to South), BLUE PELICAN, CANNONBALL, DR NO, ELAS, ENIGMA, ESPRIT 3, GALAXY (North to South), GREEN BOAT, INCRESCENT MOON, ITCHY FEET, KANDU, KINGS LEGEND, LEVENTEIA (North to South), LYKA, MIYAGI MOON (North to South), ORONO 1, PHOENIX, ROCK & ROLL STAR, RON GLAS (North to South), RONIN, SALIMA 2, SOUL, SORCERESS, SOUTHERN WING, SPIRIT OF AFRICA, VIMY, YACUBAL. I’m certain that there are more boats that have made the passage, but these are NAMED yachts, and not just statistics reported by agents.

As the Administrator for the Facebook Group RED SEA PASSAGE – I encourage cruisers who are contemplating this route to join the group. Since it is a secret, closed group – membership is vetted. You may email me at wade@joana.ca to inquire. Wade Alarie / SV Joana / http://www.joana.ca

A logical port to stage out of for a Westbound crossing of the Red Sea is Cochin Marina, India. Contact Nigel Joseph marina manager, +91 97470 57015, email to sales@oceanblue.in Send vessel name, mono or cat, dimensions, ETA and length of stay, to reserve space in the marina.
