Kawaihae - General Info
Description:
Located on the NW corner of the island, the main harbor here is a commercial one. While this does provide a few moorings for yachts, there is now a new small boat harbor (South Basin), one mile to the south. Space, however, is still limited, but this is a good stop after coming from Hilo.
Entrance Notes and Cautions:
Ensure you keep clear of the tugs and army supply boats which constantly ply this harbor.
Position:
20°01.60’N, 155°49.67’W (small boat harbor entrance)

South Kawaihae Harbor main entrance is closed and water turned off until further notice due to heavy rain. Use the alternate entrance.
The info here is really out of date. The commercial harbor has a few recreational moorings on the east side of the breakwater. The new harbor to the south has actual docks. The Harbormaster might have availability, but it’s all very limited, first come first serve.
You can land your dinghy near the boat launch ramp and there are a few places to eat and a convenience store within walking distance. Great stop after coming from Hilo.
We anchored just north of the main harbor entrance in sand. It had good holding.
Ron, thanks so much for this updated info. We rarely get feedback for Hawaii, so please do continue to send updates as you cruise. With ports from all over the world on the site, typically the most frequently visited tend to get updated regularly with feedback from the Noonsite community. Your assistance in helping keep Noonsite up to date is very much appreciated.
