Patmos - Docking

When the Meltemi blows, approach the bay with care as strong gusts blow down into the bay from the surrounding high land.

Anchoring

There is no anchoring permitted within the non-defined port limits of Skala Harbour. You will be asked to pay or move, by the Coastguard.

There are numerous anchorages around Patmos, however, and several near to Skala which are reasonably well protected from the Meltemi. All suffer from strong gusts off the surrounding high land. These include Ormos Meloyi, Ormos Livadhi, Ormos Kambos, Nisos Ay Yeoryios and Ormos Grikou and almost directly opposite Ormos Stavros.

Yacht Quay (“Marina”)

Upon entering the bay, contact the Port Authority on VHF Channel 12. They will direct you to berth at the “marina” (yacht quay) located in the NW corner of the bay on the western side of the harbor. Moor stern-to/bows-to using your own anchor. Outside the high season you may be able to berth alongside. Take care as the dock is low.

Shore power is only available on the southern half of this quay.

Once berthed, find the yacht quay management company located in a kiosk at the southern end of the yacht quay.

They can organize to turn on the electricity and water (potable) pedestals (extra charge). Note berthing fee is charged by the day, not the night.

Note: The northern part of the quay does get used for some commercial traffic, in particular, a 78-meter long fuel ship which visits three to four times during the summer months to refuel the local electric station located across the street from the yacht quay. Very little warning is given to yachts that need to move to make space, and if no one is on board the authorities will move yachts themselves. It is advisable to try and find space in the southern section.

Other Quay Space

Should the “marina” be full, yachts can try and find space in the small squarish basin on the NE side of the harbor. Depths of three meters, but no electricity and water. The ferry dock on the starboard side to the south of this basin can also be used if waiting for a spot on the quay. Both these docks are managed by the fishing co-operative who may or may not charge overnight fees.

Larger yachts can use the new quay to the south.

Shelter is good except in strong winds from the SE which can make this harbor untenable. The bottom is sand, mud, and weed and holding is good.

The walk into town is along the main road with limited pavement for pedestrians.

Hardware shops and marine supplies in Patmos

A hardware store in town next to the Alpha Bank had the bronze nuts and bolts and washers that I have been seeking for YEARS.

He tells me that he always tries to keep a variety because boaters and shipwrights always seem to have a need. I cleaned out his stock of 20 remaining 8 mm bolts, nuts, and washers so he said he would reorder and have them next year.

The price I paid was a 3-year-old price and he expects the new ones will be quite expensive. He says he gets them from a place in Athens. He had old boxes of other bronze parts behind the counter and very nice decorative bronze drawer pulls, hinges, hooks etc.

This morning a 78 m long fuel tanker came into the northern end of the “Marina” to refuel a local electrical generating station. It came in at 0700 and made a racket.

It tied up North of me in the vicinity of where there are NO shore power pods. It is refueling the electric generating station across the street.

According to some yacht owners who were moored in the northern part of the quay, they were told late last night just before 11 PM that they had to move across to the other side of the harbour to make room for the ship.

Those boats that had no one on board were apparently moved, but by whom I do not know. More (10 -11 in total) had to be moved than the space this ship occupies because there is a “no-boat” safety zone around the ship “just in case.”

If this ship exploded, none of us would be safe, but clearing out the whole pier is probably impossible to execute in the summer.

This boat, per the agents on the dock, does not come infrequently, but depending on how hot the summer is, maybe 3-4 times.

For Clarification – Astoria Travel is the Agency who in 2016 acted on behalf of the Port Authority to collect mooring and electrical fees.

As such, unless a boat has designated one of the other as their agent, Astoria does the work and collects the fee. It is possible that in 2017 another agency will have this responsibility.
