Georgia has a universal healthcare system. Medical services for foreigners in Tbilisi are generally good and in the last decade many qualified, well-structured modern hospitals and health centers have been established. Receiving quality medical health treatment in a Western-standard hospital, with English-speaking doctors, is much more the norm nowadays in Tbilisi. Outside Tbilisi, medical facilities are limited except in the larger cities. Medical care can be expensive.

Dental services in Georgia are quite cheap compared to other European countries and in most cases, the prices for foreigners and nationals don’t vary. Consequently there are a fair amount of dental clinics with high quality service in the major cities.

Visitors are advised to purchase a travel/health insurance policy that is valid throughout the whole territory of Georgia.

Vaccine-Preventable Diseases:

Aside from the usual routine vaccine, make sure you are vaccinated against Covid-19, Hepatitis A & B, Measles and Rabies – as recommended by the CDC.

Food and Water Concerns:

Water is safe to drink; however, some visitors report mildly upset stomachs due to the different treatment process (higher chlorine content).

Other Diseases:

In 2021 Georgia had one fatality due to Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) at the Tbilisi Infectious Diseases Hospital.

Tuberculosis remains a major public health challenge in Georgia.

Animals:

Venomous snakes are common, particularly in early summer.

Prescription Drugs:

For the purpose of personal need, visitors are permitted to bring 31 days reserve (supply) of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, only on the basis of the following documentation:

• Copy of prescription translated in English;
• Copy of the physician’s certificate who issued the medical prescription translated in English; and
• A document, signed and sealed, by the authorized person confirming validity of the prescription and certificate and issued by the authorized agency of the country where the individual is travelling from.

Pharmacies in major cities are generally well-stocked with essential medications, but shortages can occur. Pharmacists may give patients a different medication than what has been prescribed and many medications can be purchased without a prescription. Due to limited regulation, the quality of available medications can vary. Avoid buying medications from markets or unlicensed pharmacies, as fake medication is a common concern.
