Security Concerns for The Gambia
Overall Crime and Safety
The country is generally safe, but beware of the odd scam. Cruising yachts that have visited the country have reported feeling very safe and secure in every way with people, food, water and navigation. See this report from SV Gerty – The Gambia: An Unforgettable and Amazing Country.
Take the normal precautions – nothing of value in sight, only small amounts of money in the pocket, establishing contact with locals and shops near the anchorage, buying from locals etc.
Specific Areas of Concern
Both male and female crew should be particularly cautious of young men locally known as ‘bumsters’, who approach visitors, particularly on beaches, offering help or to act as local guides.
Following political disagreement between the government and the EU about human rights in The Gambia, there has been an increase in political tension which may lead to unannounced demonstrations in Banjul and other parts of the country. You should avoid all demonstrations.
Following French military intervention in Mali and The Gambia’s commitment to participate, there is a possibility of retaliatory attacks targeting Western interests in the region. Be vigilant.
Maritime Issues
There has been a sharp rise in the number of migrants arriving in the Canary Islands, with the Atlantic route from West Africa to the Canary Islands being increasingly used by smugglers who launch boats from Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal and even The Gambia.
More than 30,000 people have reached the Canary Islands this way. See this report for more details and what do do if you encounter a migrant boat.

Information on The Trans-Gambia Bridge and the nearby power line.
The bridge is officially 17 meters (55 feet), but it is reported possible to sail under the bridge with a 20 meter mast at low tide at spring tide.
I myself have seen a 19 meter high sailboat pass at low tide on December 6, 2021 when the tide coefficient was around 85. I estimate that there was a 25 – 50 cm margin between the mast and the bridge.
The power line five nautical miles east of the bridge is no problem to sail under. Follow the southern shore and there will be plenty of air between the mast and the powerline at any waterlevel.
Hello. Anyyne as informations about Covid procedures regarding Gambia formalities entrance?
Many thanks
