Where is Maupiti?

A short and easy sail away from Bora Bora (26 nm), Maupiti is called the paradise destination to discover.

Cruiser Highlights for Maupiti:

People here have been less touched by tourism and are very hospitable. The village of Vaiea is small and charming.

Entrance Notes and Cautions for Maupiti:

This little island offers a well-protected lagoon with a southern pass and a dogleg entrance, well marked.  See this informative video from Two Drifters about the entrance.

The catch, however, is that entry into and out of the pass can only be achieved in settled weather, ideally when wind speeds are below 20 knots and the swell is less than 6 feet. During the high (trade wind) season from April to October, conditions like this are hard to find and many boats get trapped inside, often for weeks at a time.

Ideal conditions occur during the cyclone season, but with no sheltered hurricane holes in the atoll, visits need to be brief. Because of these factors, not many cruisers and charterers explore the area.

There is an old mooring line just before the surface at approximately 16°26.800’S 152°14.716’W.

Maupiti (southern Pass) Position:

16° 29.22’S, 152° 14.76’W
