Anchorages on Matuku

Matuku has two safe, protected and comfortable anchorages, accessible through the pass on the western side of the island.

Lomati Village

Coming through the pass, proceed straight into the deep bay of Lomati which is an excellent, sheltered anchorage, 10 – 15m over mud with good holding and is protected in all wind directions except NW.    Cruisers report that it may take a while for the hook to sink into the mud, before gently pulling back, but once set, it’s set.

Wailangi Island

The second option is to turn north once you are through the pass and anchor behind Wailangi Island, in 15 to 20 m in sand with protection from all winds but SW and S.

Another possibility is to turn south after the pass, follow the reef channel and anchor off the village of Makadru, but this anchorage is more difficult due to numerous coral heads and not as calm and protected as the other ones.

There are other anchorages inside some narrow passes on the other coasts.

No-Fishing Zones

The islanders have implemented new “Tabu” (traditional ban) No-Fishing Zones to protect their (still) healthy and pristine marine environment.
