Christmas Island - Health
Christmas Island Health for Visitors
There is a modern eight-bed hospital with an Accident & Emergency department. It is staffed by eight registered nurses, four enrolled nurses and three full time medical officers.
GP ad Oral health services are also available
Patients requiring specialist care will need to go to Australia. Emergency cases are evacuated to Perth through the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Travel insurance to cover medical needs is strongly recommended including emergency evacuation from Christmas Island. Routine medical services are provided free to Australian citizens & permanent residents. International travellers may be covered under reciprocal arrangements or through travel insurance.
There is also a pharmacy on the island which stocks a large range of medicines and other health supplies.
Vaccine-Preventable Diseases:
You do not need any health certificates to enter Australia unless you have travelled through or landed in Africa, South/Central America or the Caribbean within the previous six days before arriving in Australia – including territories such as Christmas Island. If so, you will need a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate for each person who is over 12 months old. This applies even if there was no outbreak of Yellow Fever in the infected area at the time of your visit.
Food and Water Concerns:
Tap water is safe to drink.
Other Health Concerns:
Swimming in Flying Fish Cove is actively discouraged because of health concerns while any illegal vessel with asylum seekers on board is in the cove.
