Hobart - Docking

If approaching Hobart from the east and using the Denison Canal to avoid the long sail south around the Forestier Peninsula, it is necessary to call the Canal Authority a day before planned transit. (See details below).

Call Hobart Port Control on VHF channel 16 for advice.

Three of the yacht clubs have visitors’ berths.

Constitution Dock offers a safe, well-protected berth in the centre of the town. If staying for more than a night, the weekly charge is good value (there is no daily rate). It has water, power, showers and a laundry.

Elizabeth Pier is quieter and close to the restaurants but is more expensive.

There are several other berthing options around Hobart.

Margate is approximately 12nm south of Hobart (about 20 minutes by road). Redevelopment of the Margate Marina will provide 50 new berths, hardstand and trailer boat storage, slipyard and repair facilities, fuel (petrol and diesel) and pump out facilities.

See also Kettering, about 20nm south of Hobart.

Anchorages

There is an anchorage off Battery Point, outside the moorings in 15m over mud, another off Sandy Point (Nutgrove Beach) in 11m over sand. The latter being quite further from the city.

The anchorage in Kingston Bay (11m over sand) is just a dinghy ride away from supermarkets, fuel, and restaurants.

More anchorages can be found further up the River Derwent.
