Health care is adequate, but may be limited.

There is one small hospital (Princess Alexandra Hospital), 4 public clinics (GP surgeries), and numerous private clinics on the island. Serious cases requiring major surgery may have to be transferred to neighboring islands.

There are no facilities to treat decompression sickness on the island.

Travel health insurance is recommended.

Vaccine-Preventable Diseases:

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines prior to your trip.

Unvaccinated travelers are advised to get the Typhoid and Hepatitis A and B vaccinations.

For more information, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.

Food and Water Concerns:

Tap water is safe to drink. The majority of hotels and convenience stores sell bottled water.

Mosquito-borne Diseases:

There is a risk of Dengue and Zika in this country.

Because of the risks to pregnancy, travelers should consult the CDC Travelers’ Health website for the most current recommendations for Zika.

Prevention:

  • Use a repellent containing 20%-30% DEET or 20% Picaridin on exposed skin.
  • Re-apply according to the manufacturer’s directions.
  • Wear neutral-colored (beige, light grey) long-sleeved clothing.
  • Pre-soak or spray the outer layer of clothing and gear with permethrin.
  • Ensure that the hatch and window screens work properly.

Prescription Drugs:

Always carry medicines in their original container and clearly labeled. Bring a copy of your prescription and a letter from your GP with details of your medicine, including its generic name.

For a list of pharmacies on the island, visit the Anguilla Tourist Board website.

Emergency Numbers:
See Emergencies.

Hospitals:

  • The Princess Alexandra Hospital also has a pharmacy.
  • Hughes Medical Centre (located at Lower South Hill), call or send an email to book your appointment. Pharmacy is also available. Telephone number: +1 264 497 3053, Whatsapp +1 (264) 235 3053, Email: appointments@hughesmedical.com
