This harbor is well sheltered. There is a choice of berthing options.

Anchoring:

The Harbour Master will give you instructions on arrival as to where you can and can’t anchor in the bay. If use of a mooring buoy is offered, be sure to inspect it carefully before trusting your boat to the buoy.

The holding in the harbor is poor and it is advisable to anchor with two anchors and not leave the yacht unattended for long periods. It is best to anchor a distance away from the cannery to avoid the occasional smells that are emitted when they open the pressure cookers. The best holding is between the small boat wharf and the end of the bay, on the south side, in 35 to 80ft.

Following the tsunami in 2018 there is now alot of shoreside debris littering the sea floor. Cruisers have reported items catching on anchor chains, so anchor with caution and make sure your anchor is well dug in.

Long term resident yachts have moorings, so bear that in mind when anchoring nearby.

There is a dingy dock in front of McDonalds and also at the Malaloa Marina.

Marina:

The small marina is on the southern side of the harbor, not suitable for the majority of cruising boats.

The Harbour Master may be able to offer a mooring buoy but these should be carefully inspected before trusting your boat to them, or he may suggest a suitable anchoring spot.

It is important not to move the boat within the harbor (even to the fuel berth) without getting prior permission for the HM.
