Archipelago Gradually Returning to Normal

Following a state of emergency imposed in May 2024 due to deadly unrest in the archipelago by indigenous people who have long sought independence, the situation in New Caledonia is gradually improving for visiting yachts. While there is still a nightly curfew in place, some boats are managing to cruise the southern lagoon islets near Noumea during daylight hours.

According to New Caledonia Tourism, the archipelago is gradually returning to normal with the reopening of transport, shops and services. However, the tourism sector is adapting to the challenging economic situation amplified by a temporary drop in visitor numbers and many businesses are relying on public aid measures to navigate this period.

To ensure the best possible experience, New Caledonia Tourism recommends postponing trips to the archipelago for the next two months.

Nightly Curfew

Currently, there is a curfew in place from 10 PM to 5 AM and a temporary ban on the retail sale of alcohol is in place across New Caledonia to help maintain order.  Some localised disturbances may still occur in a few areas (the Great South Road is blocked at the St Louis tribe), but traffic is strongly improving with the removal of most roadblocks.

The road between Nouméa and La Tontouta International Airport is clear and airlines and ferry services are steadily restoring their domestic and international routes.

Refuelling and Provisioning Stops Possible

Clementine Givre from Noumea Yacht Services confirmed the situation in New Caledonia had improved for cruising yachts.

“We hope to welcome tourists back soon under good conditions,” Clementine told Noonsite.  “All activities have resumed and boats can now stop for refueling and provisioning without any issues.

“At present, it is not really recommended to move around the islands, but there are no prohibitions against it. We do have some boats that are cruising in the southern lagoon islets near Noumea.

“In regards to the curfew, sailors are advised to stay in marinas or anchorages during curfew hours to comply with the restrictions. However, the situation is evolving regularly, and adjustments may be made.  Anyone is welcome to contact us if they have any questions.”
