Namibia Navigational Alert: Diamond Mining Zone North of Lüderitz

Lüderitz is a town in southern Namibia, situated on one of the least hospitable coasts in southern Africa.  It is one of two ports of entry for Namibia – the other being Walvis Bay further north.

In its latest newsletter, OSASA is warning of a growing navigational risk 40 nautical miles north of Lüderitz due to increased diamond mining activity in the area.

According to OSASA, a yacht without AIS recently sailed through this zone, ignoring warnings. In Cape Town, its crew openly shared tales of their previous stop there—an area now designated for active diamond mining with large vessels and anchor cables in place.

Restricted Area

“Despite warnings, many yachts are still drawn to this bay, unaware of the legal restrictions and potential dangers,” said OSASA.  “Any crew that goes ashore risks arrest, as the area is strictly off-limits. Unfortunately, such incidents often get misrepresented online, unfairly casting Namibia in a negative light.

“To prevent further issues, Giel du Toit – cruiser contact in Lüderitz – is in contact with the Ministry of Mines and Energy for an official notice. Once confirmed, he will also coordinate with Namport to explore whether Port Control can remind departing yachts to adhere to these regulations.

“Though not their duty, we maintain a strong working relationship, and collaboration could enhance safety.  For now, yachts are advised to stay clear of this restricted zone and ensure they comply with Namibian laws.”
