Malaysia: Royal Langkawi Yacht Club geared for redevelopment

LANGKAWI, January 2015 – The Royal Langkawi Yacht Club (RLYC) is planning to redevelop its club and marina to enhance its facilities and services, and meet the demands of the sailing and yachting community in the region and beyond. This will cause some disruption to existing berth holders and longer stays will not be possible until the upgrades are finished end of October 2015.

RLYC, located on the island of Langkawi in the northwest of Peninsula Malaysia, is positioned as the ideal stopover for travelers whether by land or sea. Established 18 years ago, the club has maintained its status as a prominent destination for sailors by providing world-class marina and berthing facilities as well as food and beverage services in an idyllic island setting.

“RLYC has a long history and while we intend to maintain the traditions that have been established, we believe that redeveloping will enable us to provide our loyal clientele, and future clients, with what they deserve, which are world-class marina facilities and boutique hospitality services,” said Executive Director and General Manager, Wicky Sundram.

The redevelopment works, scheduled to begin in February 2015 and expected to be operational by the end of October 2015, will include the restructure and design of a new three-story block of shop lots, lifestyle floor and boutique retail outlets.

The main clubhouse will also undergo a major refurbishment and Level 1 will see a grand lobby and reception area. A completely new concept will take over Level 2, and will feature eight boutique rooms for guest accommodations, four of which will have balconies overlooking the ocean and marina.

The project will involve redevelopment of the marina, including the expansion of mega-yacht berths. The marina will be fitted out with new power systems, sanitation pumps, safety equipment, and additional berths.

In order to accommodate the RLYC redevelopment project, the club facilities at RLYC will temporarily cease operations from early 16 February 2015 until the end of October 2015.

The marina will be in operation and none of the existing boats will need to get out. As and when works get into marina side, we will need to shift some boats here and there. As for new boats, we are being very careful, as not to take them on long-term until we complete the expansion/upgrade works.

We have already set up a temporary bar/café with limited food (burgers/sandwiches/snacks) from the Pool bar. That will start operating from 16 February. The TV and Astro will also be relocated there, so our berth holders will still get to watch their favorite sports and news. Cold beers from the tap will be made available….. Toilet and shower facilities for boat owners in the marina will still remain untouched and fully functional.

    Response from RLYC:

We will have an additional 80-meter seawall constructed at the South Entrance with a 30-meter opening gate. I hope the additional breakwater would minimize the wake problems….

I can’t say at this moment that it will completely stop but looking forward to a much more calmer marina.

Are they going to add additional breakwaters? RLYC suffers from a terrible surge problem and staying there can be very uncomfortable.
