French Polynesia, Moorea: Young Cruiser Struck and Killed by Speedboat

Six weeks ago, a speedboat came too close, too fast to a yacht at anchor, struck and tragically killed a teenage boy who was snorkelling on the anchor. Eddie Jarman, aged 14, had been cruising French Polynesia for the last 9 months with his family.

Eddie and his family, parents Harry Jarman and Barbara Genda, and 13-year-old sister Amelie Jarman, had departed Lanzarote, Canary Islands, approximately 18 months ago, and had been cruising French Polynesia for the last nine months.

Their Discovery 55 “September A.M.” was at anchor in Opunohu Bay, Moorea in August, when Eddie snorkelled down to check the anchor. At the same time a fast speedboat passed too fast and too close to the boat causing panic and chaos when it hit the young teenager who was in the water.

Mum Barbara told the BBC, “It took us at least – I don’t know – a minute to actually realise, to accept in our minds, that the person who they were holding in the water, it was our son.”

Efforts to revive Eddie were unsuccessful.

Eddie played three instruments and was a talented musician. His family have established a fund in memory of Eddie to help introduce more children to music. Three children in French Polynesia and a further three children in England will benefit from the donations this year and the same every year for as long as the funds allow. The family hope to help more and more children to live better lives with music.

Tragic and pointless ruination of many lives.

Our good friends were waiting out quarantine in Faulmouth Harbor, Antigua. The wife of many years was run over and killed by a dinghy driving way too close while she was snorkel swimming laps around their boat. The driver was another cruiser. We should all know to stay far from other boats and Keep proper watch while motoring.
