Magnetic North Pole: Shifting Rapidly and Unpredictably

With the Earth’s north magnetic pole currently moving

Magnetic North is Shifting

at an unusually rapid 50 km (30 miles) a year, researchers will be making an early update to the World Magnetic Model.

The poles movement is determined by changes in the liquid iron located deep in the Earth’s core and the model is typically updated every five years. While most people at mid or low latitudes or those relying on GPS for car travel won’t notice the shift, vessels operating in the Arctic are affected.

The updates were set for 2020 but its now taking place on January 30, 2019. See the story reported by gCaptain for more information.
