We Ran Away to Sea
We Ran Away to Sea: A Memoir and Letters
In 1984, Kent, a philosophy professor, and Pam, a potter, left their jobs, sold their home and possessions, and set out with their two kids, ages ten and fourteen, in search of adventure and a different way of life. With no prior experience at sea or sailing, they decided that a sailboat would be the ideal vehicle for their new life.
Relying solely on celestial navigation (before GPS), they sailed across the Atlantic aboard a 38-foot ketch with a book in one hand and a sextant in the other.
Pam’s letters and Kent’s stories capture the magnificent experience of their years at sea, their perilous overland journeys, and the hardships that threatened to separate them but drew them closer together.
