Kuala Terengganu - General Info
Where is Kuala Terengganu?
Terengganu is an interesting old port with a colourful history as a trading centre, and now a base for vessels serving Malaysia’s offshore oil and gas fields. It is the centre for Malay culture and heritage. This is an excellent base for exploring the offshore islands.
Entrance Notes and Cautions for Kuala Terengganu:
There is a lot of boating traffic in and around the Kuala Terengganu breakwater, especially from fishing boats, oil and gas crew vessels and tourist boats admiring the bascule bridge.
Officially opened in August 2019, the Terengganu Drawbridge was inspired by the famous Tower Bridge of London, and is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. Stretching over 638 metres across the Terengganu River, this drawbridge connects Kuala Terengganu to Seberang Takir. However, yachts who wish to pass through the bridge must request for the bridge to be raised and this will incur a fee [1500 MR one way].
It has been reported that the bridge has opening issues – sometimes it is operational – sometimes not. Clearance is 12.4m.
Cruiser Highlights for Kuala Terengganu:
Terengganu is home to various enchanting islands with picture-perfect, white sandy beaches and crystal-clear water, peppered along the South China Sea and which form the Terengganu Marine Park.
The Pasar Payang market, located in a large warehouse at the heart of Kuala Terengganu, is open daily from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM and features a variety of stalls selling local items at affordable prices
Position:
05° 20.45’N, 103° 09.42’E (harbour entrance)

The Drawbridge is still a disaster. Nobody answers the phone under the number shown at the website. No opening schedule in place still. Even the Duyong Marina, located behind the bridge, cannot give any information on how to pass the bridge to come to the marina.
After 2 days I found out another number of the bridge handler. 1500 MR one way. Insane.
So staying outside on Anchor to sit out the bad weather with waves of 4 mtr, breaking in front of the entrance and slamming into the port basin. Its safe behind the breaker, but no way to go out again as long as the waves doesnt go down.
Phone No. Bridge handler: +60 19 644 0212 (whatsapp as well)
The bridge is currently a disaster!
You are asked to request the drawbridge to be lifted at a cost of RM1200 ONE WAY.
Anchoring in the breakwater area is good. I left my boat there for 3 weeks.
A person I have known for a long time checked the boat every 2 days.
(Will check if ok to post his number!)
There appears to be no plan for a schedule. I was told by the bridge office there will be openings each week – for maintenance.
I have seen NOTHING in 4 weeks.

And the day I wrote this at 3 45pm the bridge lifted for 10 minutes!!
Actually impossible to contact Mr. Dim by phone… good to know, the bridge cannot open due to works … I anchored behind the breakwater, paddled with the dinghy ashore, took a taxi (50 rm both ways) to the airport.
After 1 hour in the office of immigration, all paperwork is done, the officer in charge don’t remember the code for the safe where the stamp for the passport is stored. So tomorrow I have to come back early before to visit Harbourmaster and customs… and go back again after to check out.
UPDATE: Kuala Terengganu harbour entry. A very large bridge has been erected across the main harbour channel, approximately 500m W of the breakwater entry into this harbour. Until Sept 2018, passing under/through this new bridge was not a problem as they were still constructing the centre span.
This has now been completed and the only way through and into the harbour is to contact the port to have the centre span lifted (clearance is far too low for pretty much all cruising yachts.
For now, cruisers are advised to contact During Marina inside Terengganu harbour well in advance of your arrival to advise ETA at the new lift bridge. Recent cruisers have had success by liaising with Mr Din at Duyong Marina on +60 13 34 3068.
As this is early days for the operation of this lift bridge, expect some confusion around booking this. Patience and politeness will go a long way. There is no VHF channel advised for comms to do this at the time of writing this update.
A monohull is now 4 Ringgit per meter and a catamaran 5.30 per meter per day. + power and water. The showers/ Sauna 30 per person and the gym 20 per person, they are no longer free courtesy of a new manager.
Bernie Katchor has passed on more details about Awi:
Awi’s yellow house: phone +60179840337
I suggest people call him to see if he has availability.
The jetty is rickety, water and electricity are available. You need to use 4 anchor lines to remain nearby the jetty (i.e. tying to the floating jetty is not important, the 4 lines are). I went through the flood that 250,000 people were evacuated in on these lines – the river rose 12 ft 2 miles from the ocean.
5 deg 19.731 x 103 deg 7.553 is the location.
He is a valuable contact for any cruiser as he knows everything, speaks English and will taxi around.

berniekatchor could you please give me Awie’s contact thanks. Just spoken with the Marina and they are asking rm50 per day for a 10m vessel, almost 30% more than the Langkawi RYC and certainly not the same facilities lol
