Description:

This port is a known hurricane hole. Situated on Costa Rica’s North Pacific coast, below the hurricane belt and sheltered from the easterly trade winds of Papagayo, the marina offers a safe haven (albeit a five star one!). The international airport is less than half an hour’s drive away.

This is the northerly-most port of entry on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

It is important to note that clearing in or out at Marina Papagayo does require the use of an agent as the Port of Entry is Playa del Coco. This can be costly. See the clearance section below for more details.

Cruiser Highlights:

Staying at Marina Papagayo gives you access to facilities and amenities on Peninsula Papagayo including beaches, hiking trails and a golf course.

Position:

10°38.14’N, 85°39.16’W.

The marina has excellent facilities. Great showers, gym (though a/c must be requested to be turned on in the gym), washer/dryers, great restaurant at the Marina (Dive Bar), market with basic food items (but does have breakfast items – no decaf coffee though), concierge and ships’ store with basic chandlery items, and wonderful restaurants nearby. The only negative is the extreme amount of birds that inevitably land on the boat at dusk and make a terrible mess of the boat. Daily washing required. Dan, the Marina Manager, could not be more helpful, as all the staff here are. Be aware – there is surge – as with many marinas on the west coast of Costa Rica. Beautiful location and many optional trips for exploring this coast are offered through the Concierge.

Nice marina in the northernmost gulf. Be sure to check in in Cocos before arriving for fuel. We spent a month in each of the three gulfs and this one was most enjoyable. Calm quiet anchorages and cleaner water than farther south.

Marina Papagayo has laundry facilities you can use if you stop in for the day or overnight. Purchase tokens at the marina store behind the restaurant. Staff is friendly and helpful.

We stopped in for fuel and water and stayed a few hours with no extra charge to do some cleaning and laundry. Nothing much around here, but the birds and howler monkeys are enjoyable at sunrise and sunset. If bonding, this would be my first choice of marinas.
