Protests over the cost of living

Protests in Martinique began in September to demand the alignment of local food prices with those of mainland France, where they are 40% lower. Curfews have been introduced on the island since then, and in late September the French government sent in riot police after protesters ignored bans on public gatherings.

Protests flared again last week, including looting, arson, street demonstrations and roadblocks.

The Martinique Administration re-imposed the curfew from 9pm to 5am and this has now been extended until October 21st, due to ongoing civil unrest. People are only allowed to travel or be outdoors for work, or health reasons (such as going to hospital).

The initial curfew measures were due to end on October 14th, however, an extension has been made by the local administration “to guarantee the safety of people and property”. One protester has been shot dead and 26 police officers injured in the unrest.

The International Airport briefly closed on Thursday afternoon when protesters stormed the runway.

Foreign visitors in Martinique should check with local authorities regarding the current security situation, specific areas impacted by the curfew and whether any travel during the hours of the curfew could fall under one of the exceptions.

There is a ban, until October 21st, on the sale of fuel (as well as other items).
