Panama, Bocas del Toro: Burglars Deterred by Secure Locking Cables

Thieves who tried to steal a dinghy and fuel tank from a yacht in the Bocas Marina anchorage at Bocas del Toro in Panama were deterred by the secure locking cables used by the vessel’s crew.

EVENT:  Theft

HAND: 1

STOLEN ITEMS:    Gas can, attempted to steal dingy. Another boat reported attempt to steal their pango.

SECURED:  Locked

DETAILS:

While owners slept thieves untied the dinghy painter before discovering the locking cable that secured the dinghy/outboard and fuel tank. Diesel fuel jugs secured on the deck were also disturbed, but not taken. A spare fuel jug in the cockpit was not locked and stolen.

A second yacht in the anchorage interrupted the attempted theft of their panga, and was able to scare the thieves away.

Reports were made to the marina and on the VHF net.
